REHABILITATION

REHAB FOR BACK AND/OR HINDQUARTER INJURY

Back & hindquarter injuries are very common in horses at any level, and can often be the most difficult to rehabilitate. At Trafalgar Lodge we have access to an expert chiro/physio practising vet to treat any horses suffering from this problem, who will also give an in-depth assessment of your horse and advise the best course of action.

Often these injuries or general muscle tightness require stretching exercises, massaging with a hand held machine, a course of anti-inflammatories and a gradual exercise program. This usually requires non weight bearing work, which is when the treadmill becomes so important. We have already successfully treated racehorses with significant back/neck/HQ issues back to health, as well as performance horses.

POST-SURGERY REHAB

Whether it be rehabilitation for a wind operation, colic surgery, bone chip removal etc, the level of care required is generally extensive and time consuming, which is why we are here to help. We are able to follow discharge instructions to the letter, which can often include multiple treatments/injections each day, bandage changes, ice therapy and so forth.

Sue and Emily have worked in closely with Werribee Equine Hospital and Ballarat Vet Clinic, and have access to many experienced veterinarians. Having already dealt with a large number of post-surgery cases, they have the hands on experience and knowledge to give each horse the best chance at recovery.

LOWER LIMB REHAB AND/OR WOUND MANAGEMENT

Lower limb rehabilitation can be anything from a bowed tendon to a damaged suspensory ligament to a hairline fracture etc. These types of injuries often require all or a combination of: ice therapy, bandaging, regular scans/x-rays, and constant monitoring of the affected area. The importance of correct bandaging is often underestimated when in fact a poorly applied bandage can cause significant damage.

Generally the horse is required to start off confined to a box, and then a small yard during the day when advised by the vet. Once the area is at the correct stage of healing, a walking program is introduced and built up slowly. The major benefit of the treadmill is that the horse is on an even surface which doesn't require any turning, and has to walk at a controlled speed.

Rehabilitation can be a difficult process for a horse owner, whether it be post-surgery or an unexpected injury - not having the appropriate facilites, experience or time can make the task virtuallly impossible. The rehabilitation process is an integral part to the horse's chance of making a good recovery, and requires a thorough approach. Sue and Emily have rehabilitated many horses over the years under the guidance of first class veterinarians with great success. Listed below are the types of rehab we have extensive experience and knowledge to undertake.
